Stabilization works Scheldt quays

Commissioned by De Vlaamse Waterweg, Herbosch-Kiere carried out stabilisation works on the Scheldt Quays in Antwerp from 2023 until the end of 2025. These works formed part of the phased redevelopment of the quays under the Sigmaplan, a programme designed to better protect Antwerp against flooding while restoring the connection between the city and the river.

The existing quay wall showed clear signs of structural instability. This negatively affected both the landward flood protection embankment (SIGMA dike) and the adjacent downstream cargo handling quay at Blue Gate Antwerp.

To relieve the pressure on the area, a new anchored combined sheet pile wall was constructed landward at the current SIGMA level. The existing quay wall was partially demolished, and the soil behind it was excavated to further reduce the load on the structure. This created a natural riverbank that contributes to a more sustainable river environment. In addition, a new berm was constructed below the low-water level in front of the existing quay wall.

The project also included the necessary repairs and modifications to the return wall of the existing cargo handling quay. Through these works, Herbosch-Kiere made a significant contribution to the structural safety and future development of the Antwerp Scheldt Quays as part of the Sigmaplan.
