In Ingelmunster, we are currently working on the construction of a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Roeselare–Leie Canal. This project includes not only the bridge itself but also all associated infrastructure. By building this new bridge, we are creating a safe and comfortable crossing while also strengthening connections within the region.
On both banks, access ramps of more than 300 meters are being constructed in wide, flowing loops. This allows cyclists and pedestrians to comfortably and safely navigate the changes in height.
On the northern side, the access ramp is being built on pillars due to the area’s susceptibility to flooding. On the southern side, we are using embankments and raised sections to ensure a smooth connection with the existing terrain. In early November, an important milestone was reached: the first concrete pour of the northern ramp!
The new bridge will have a clearance height of 7 meters, allowing ships carrying three layers of containers to pass safely and smoothly. In addition, the lowest existing bridge over the canal will be removed, further improving the flow and efficiency of inland navigation.
This project is part of the larger Seine–Schelde network, which promotes sustainable inland shipping as an environmentally friendly and future-oriented alternative to road transport.
