Borcht Bridge Mechelen

The Borcht Bridge is a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Afleidingsdijle in Mechelen, creating a direct connection between Douaneplein and the Nekkerspoel district. Commissioned by De Vlaamse Waterweg, the bridge strengthens Mechelen’s cycling and walking network by providing a safe, comfortable, and sustainable crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.

Herbosch-Kiere was responsible for the construction and installation of the steel arch bridge. The steel bridge deck, measuring 43 metres in length, 5 metres in width, and weighing 69 tonnes, was successfully floated into position before the bridge was completed and opened to the public.

Beyond its functional role, the Borcht Bridge also serves as an architectural landmark. Its distinctive asymmetrical steel arch and integrated seating area create an attractive public space where users can pause and enjoy views over the River Dijle.

The project is a valuable addition to Mechelen’s public infrastructure, improving accessibility, promoting sustainable mobility, and enhancing the quality of the urban environment.
