17,700 tonnes of rock for ‘Dumping Area 42’
From 15 to 20 August, our Atlantis carried out works near the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier in the Netherlands. As a subcontractor for Van den Herik Sliedrecht, on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat, a total of 17,700 tonnes of rock were placed to fill ‘Dumping Area 42’.
Precise rock placement near the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier
The dumping area was located just 115 metres from the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier. Two different rock gradings were accurately placed on the seabed to protect the underlying block mats against erosion.
The operation required a high degree of precision. An anchor pile extending approximately two metres above the seabed was located right in the middle of the dumping area. Thanks to the Atlantis’ Dynamic Positioning (DP) system, the rocks could be accurately placed around the pile without making contact with it.
The operation is a good example of the precision and technical control required when carrying out rock placement works in close proximity to existing infrastructure.
Successful collaboration
The project was carried out as a subcontractor for Van den Herik Sliedrecht, on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat. Thanks to thorough preparation and close cooperation between all parties involved, the works were completed successfully and according to schedule.
Next destination: South Gare
Following the works near the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier, the Atlantis is preparing for its next assignment at South Gare. A total of 20,000 tonnes of rock will be placed there, in collaboration with our colleagues from Herbosch-Kiere Marine Contractors.
