Herbosch-Kiere contributes to the construction of the new Steenplein pontoon

Herbosch-Kiere announces that, together with its sister company Smulders (via Iemants), it is involved in the delivery of the new Steenplein pontoon in Antwerp.

Collaboration within the Eiffage Group

Herbosch-Kiere and Smulders (via Iemants) are acting jointly as main contractors for the construction of a new pontoon at Steenplein in Antwerp. In subcontracting, close collaboration is taking place with Eiffage Énergie Systèmes, all part of the Eiffage Group. Preparatory works are currently ongoing, after which on-site works will commence in October.

Execution of the works

As a specialist in marine civil engineering, Herbosch-Kiere is responsible for the execution of this infrastructure project, while Smulders delivers the steel structure. Herbosch-Kiere carries out the removal of the existing bridge, steel piles and pontoon. Subsequently, the new bridge, piles and pontoon are installed. On-site works will start at the beginning of November and run until 31 March 2027. Once completed, the renewed infrastructure will improve accessibility, increase passenger comfort, and enhance operational efficiency for the waterbus and ferry services, thereby further supporting sustainable mobility in Antwerp. Eiffage Énergie Systèmes will be responsible for the electrification and technical outfitting of the pontoon.

Technical features of the new pontoon

The new pontoon, measuring 150 metres in length, will accommodate multiple vessels and will be equipped with a spacious access bridge and comfortable waiting facilities. The design ensures smooth, safe and accessible passenger flow and responds to the growing demand for efficient water transport in Antwerp.

Construction, transport and delivery

The structure, consisting of approximately 1,700 tonnes of steel, is fully assembled in Vlissingen and then transported by water to Antwerp for installation. Through this project, Herbosch-Kiere further confirms its expertise in complex maritime infrastructure and its role in sustainable mobility solutions. The new pontoon will become an important hub for water transport in the city. Completion is scheduled for spring 2027.

Project partners

The project is being carried out on behalf of De Vlaamse Waterweg nv, based on the design by SBE, and in collaboration with the City of Antwerp and AG Vespa.
