On Monday, 29 June, the new ‘Borchtbrug’ in Mechelen was officially inaugurated. This new pedestrian and cycling bridge adds an important link to Mechelen’s cycling and walking network. Connecting Douaneplein with the Nekkerspoel district, the bridge provides a safe and comfortable crossing over the Afleidingsdijle.
Commissioned by De Vlaamse Waterweg, we were responsible for the construction and installation of this striking steel arch bridge. The bridge deck was successfully floated into position and installed at the end of May. Following the completion of the finishing works, the bridge has now been officially opened to the public.
Measuring 43 metres in length, 5 metres in width, and weighing 69 tonnes, the Borcht Bridge is not only a functional connection but also an architectural landmark. Its asymmetrical steel arch and integrated seating area create an inviting space where pedestrians and cyclists can pause and enjoy the view over the River Dijle.
The official opening ceremony was attended by local residents, representatives of the City of Mechelen and De Vlaamse Waterweg. More than 150 pupils from nearby schools had the honour of being the first to cross the new bridge. Together with circus performers and musicians, they helped turn the inauguration into a memorable celebration.
