Progress in Zulte: the new bridge is taking shape
Work on the new cycling and pedestrian bridge over the River Leie in Zulte is progressing well. With the installation of the first two bridge sections, the new connection between the centre of Zulte and Te Lake Castle is becoming increasingly visible. Another major milestone is planned in the coming weeks: the installation of the third and central bridge section. This will bring the realisation of this new connection one important step closer.
In Zulte, the new cycling and pedestrian bridge over the River Leie is steadily taking shape. The bridge is located near Limnanderdreef and Te Lake Castle. At approximately 99 metres long, it will provide an important missing link for cyclists and pedestrians.
The new bridge will also restore the historic connection between the centre of Zulte and the Te Lake estate. Before the Leie was straightened and canalised, a straight avenue connected the town centre with the castle at this location. The new bridge will once again give this historic connection a place in the landscape.
In addition to the construction of the bridge, the project includes earthworks and the nature-friendly redevelopment of the riverbanks.
Earthworks and riverbank redevelopment
The area surrounding the bridge will also be fully landscaped. On the side of Te Lake Castle, a rest area with a bench and bicycle parking will be created on the abutment. From here, cyclists and walkers will enjoy views over the Leie and the castle estate.
The banks of the Leie will also be redeveloped in a nature-friendly way. New shallow bank areas will create additional space for plants and wildlife. The partially floodable design will also give the Leie more room during periods of high water levels.
Progress of the works
Preparatory works began in February 2025. Since then, the abutments, piers and approach ramps have been completed, and bridge sections 1 and 2 have now been installed.
The next major milestone is planned for Saturday 26 September. On that day, the third and central bridge section will be transported across the water to Zulte and lifted into position. The bridge section will first be assembled in Sint-Baafs-Vijve and then transported to the construction site in one piece by water.
Following its installation, the remaining concrete and welding works will be carried out. The entire bridge will then be finished with a wearing course. According to the current schedule, the bridge could be opened to the public as early as November 2026.
The project is part of Seine-Scheldt, a European project focused on future-oriented inland navigation while also paying attention to nature, recreation and sustainable mobility.
