Moerhuize Bridge in Maldegem

At the request of De Vlaamse Waterweg, Herbosch-Kiere constructed the new Moerhuize Bridge, a permanent concrete bridge over the Leopold Canal in Maldegem. This modern bridge replaces the old Oosthoekbrug, which had been compromised by corrosion, providing a durable and safe solution for local traffic.

As the main contractor, Herbosch-Kiere was responsible for the entire project, from design and engineering to execution. The bridge was designed as an integral bridge, where the bridge deck is monolithically connected to the abutments, allowing for a long span with limited height.

The abutments are constructed on 16-meter-long sheet piles with concrete cast in place, while the bridge deck consists of prefabricated concrete slabs. On both sides, 1.2-meter-wide footpaths are provided, including passing bays to facilitate crossing traffic.

A significant challenge within the project was the logistics: the five concrete bridge beams, each 34 meters long and weighing 53 tons, had to be transported via a narrow agricultural path only three meters wide. To accomplish this, part of the embankment was temporarily excavated, and barriers were placed to ensure safe transportation.

The new Moerhuizebrug improves local mobility, with attention to agricultural traffic, and strengthens the regional road network around Maldegem. The project was officially inaugurated on July 9, 2025.
