The aim of the contract was to realise a clearance height of 9.10 m for maritime traffic at the Brug Van den Azijn bridge in Antwerp as well as to get rid of the existing narrow section of the canal underneath the bridge in order to prevent the obstruction of maritime traffic in the future. The contract also included the renovation of the bank protection on the left bank of the Albert Canal, including the construction of new towpaths.
Herbosch-Kiere demolished the existing bridge and replaced it with a steel arch bridge measuring 88.5 m long. The narrow section of the canal under the bridge was also removed. We rebuilt the bridge’s ramps and built retaining walls and semi-vertical retaining walls using reinforced earth. To renew the left bank upstream of the bridge, we built a new quay wall approximately 400 m long behind the existing quay wall.
