Lock Scaldis

The Scaldis Lock is a lock on the Lower Scheldt in Ghent. It was necessary to construct the lock because the water level of the Lower Scheldt and the other watercourses in Ghent city centre were approximately 1.2 m higher than the water in the Lys at Nieuwbrug quay and Portus Ganda. The Scaldis Lock was delivered with a slide-off for kayaks.

The work consisted of the construction of the complete lock, including the control building, lock gates and electromechanics. Throughout the construction of the lock chamber which took a year, the construction pit was kept dry by means of monitorable and controllable drainage. The 40-metre-long and 5.5-metre-wide lock has a drop of 1.16 m which bridges the difference in the height of the water level between the Lys and the Scheldt.
