Remediation of Kwadebeek Sint-Genesius-Rode

In the fall of 2023, the municipality of Sint-Genesius-Rode, along with the Flemish Environment Agency (VLM), the Department of Environment, and OVAM, collaborated to clean up a part of the landfill near the Kwadebeek, undertaken by Herbosch-Kiere. Approximately 6500m³ of waste material was removed and transported to a sanitation company. A temporary construction road was built to enable excavation without disturbing the soil. A 2-meter strip of waste material was cleared on both sides of the stream, allowing the Kwadebeek to meander freely once again. The stream banks were reinforced naturally with perkoen poles and rough stone to ensure stability during heavy rainfalls. There remains a portion of the landfill along both sides of the Kwadebeek. To prevent its movement, the banks were lined with a layer of clay and half a meter of soil. The banks are further stabilized by planting alders and seeding with grasses. The valley is now allowed to naturally return to a valley forest.
