Soil protection Rupel Tunnel

For this contract, Herbosch-Kiere made the section of the Brussels-Scheldt canal above the Rupel tunnel deeper for the first time. The aim of the contract was to make this section of the canal accessible to vessels with a maximum tonnage of up to 10,000 tons.

We dredged +/- 6500 m³ of sludge and +/- 8700 m³ of firm soil from the canal bed using our pontoon NEPTUNUS 16. We used the same pontoon to dump +/- 10,000 t of rubble. Besides carrying out this deepening, soil protection was also installed on the canal bed. Herbosch-Kiere assisted DCN Diving during the installation of +/- 7500 m² of 20-cm-thick concrete mattresses. Those 32 mattresses were installed on the canal bed, zipped together and filled with concrete.
