On behalf of De Vlaamse Waterweg, Herbosch-Kiere has been carrying out stabilization works on the Scheldt Quays since 2023. These works are part of the phased redevelopment of the quays within the Sigmaplan, which aims to better protect Antwerp against flooding while restoring the connection between the city and the river.
The existing quay wall showed clear signs of instability. This had a negative impact on both the landward flood-defence SIGMA dike and the adjacent downstream transshipment quay of Blue Gate Antwerp.
To relieve the area, a new anchored combi wall is being constructed landward at the current SIGMA level. The old quay wall is partially demolished, and by excavating the soil behind the existing wall, the structure is further relieved. In this way, a natural riverbank is created, contributing to a sustainable river environment. In front of the old quay wall, an additional berm is also being constructed below the low-water line.
In addition, the return wall of the existing transshipment quay will undergo the necessary repairs and modifications. Through these works, Herbosch-Kiere makes an important contribution to the structural safety and future development of the Antwerp Scheldt Quays within the Sigmaplan.
