The 4 mitre lock gates (2 upstream and 2 downstream) of the Viersel lock were in need of renovation. The lock gates dated back to the mid-1930s and were worn out.
Besides the replacement of the gates, a number of appurtenances were also replaced such as the various elements of the upper pivot point, lower pivot point, pressure seats, wooden bumpers and waste weirs (including part of the mechanics).
Finally, a number of cracks in the chamber walls/floor were also injected and a number of natural stone bumpers were repaired.
