Restoration works on ‘middendijk’ enter new phase

We are proud of the progress we are making in restoring the ‘middendijk’ between the Leopold Canal and the Schipdonk Canal, also known as the ‘Blinker’ and the ‘Stinker.’ The work is progressing well, and we are even a few months ahead of schedule!

The dike had been facing issues for some time due to a breach in 2018. Since the summer of 2023, we’ve been working on a comprehensive restoration over an eight-kilometer stretch, spanning Knokke-Heist, Bruges, and Damme. Our goal? To bring the dike back to top condition, ensuring the region’s safety.

What have we accomplished so far?

The first phase, along the Leopold Canal, was completed faster than expected. This included repairing the slopes and reinforcing the base of the dike using geotextile mattresses, which were covered with rubble stones. A solid and sustainable solution!

What’s next?

The next phase will begin on the side of the Leie Diversion Canal, with work scheduled to start in February 2025. As in the current phase, most of the work will be carried out from the water. If all goes well, the entire project will be completed by 2027.

Good news for cyclists

The towpath along the Leopold Canal, between the A11 bridge and the N376 bridge in Knokke-Heist, is being cleared and repaired. Starting this spring, cyclists can enjoy a smooth route without detours.

The work is being carried out in collaboration with Van Aalsburg, commissioned by De Vlaamse Waterweg.
