Successful installation of new bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Diest

Last week, the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Diest was successfully lifted into place. In several phases, four steel bridge sections, each weighing between 13 and 17 tons, were carefully positioned over the Demer. The complex operation went smoothly and according to plan, ensuring that the bridge is now fully in its final location. In the coming weeks, the bridge will be further completed so that it will be ready for use by the end of May.

The coming weeks will focus on further finishing touches. Welding, painting, and various details will be completed to make the bridge fully ready for use. Additionally, the bridge deck will be fitted with 50 prefabricated concrete panels made of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The mixture used for the concrete panels is BSI, developed and certified by Eiffage. This innovative material offers several key advantages:

  • Exceptional strength – The panels are made of ultra-high-performance concrete (130 MPa), which is significantly stronger than traditional concrete.
  • Slim design – With a thickness of just 6 cm, the panels are exceptionally thin and lightweight without compromising strength.
  • Optimal fit – Seven different types of concrete panels are used to follow the curvature of the bridge and provide openings for water level gauges.
  • High-quality engineering and production – The panels were designed by AEVIA (Eiffage Génie Civil, Paris) and manufactured by Jousselin Prefabrication (France).
