An important milestone for the project in Zulte: the missing section of the brand-new Firtelbrug has been successfully lifted into place.
Our floating sheerleg crane Antigoon carried out the lifting operation, safely positioning the impressive steel bridge deck, measuring no less than 52.3 metres in length and weighing approximately 100 tonnes, in its final position. The bridge deck first made its way by water from Sint-Baafs-Vijve, where it was collected from the quay.
The bridge structure is partly the result of the expertise of CSM Steelstructures, who were responsible for the construction of the steelwork. With the bridge deck now firmly in place, the area along the Leie is gradually taking its final shape. The finishing works are well underway and, by the end of December, cyclists and pedestrians are expected to cross the new bridge for the very first time.
Those looking at the photos may also have noticed the striking green colour of the Leie. This is duckweed, a natural phenomenon that has been particularly visible at several locations along the river in recent weeks.
The new bridge is now approximately 99 metres long and forms an important missing link for cyclists and pedestrians. It also restores the historic connection between the centre of Zulte and the Te Lake castle estate. Before the Leie was straightened and canalised, a straight avenue once ran here, connecting the village centre with the castle.
