Brielpoort bridge in Deinze open to cyclists and pedestrians

The brand new Brielpoort bridge opened on 26 March. The 38-metre-long bascule bridge over the touristic section of the Lys now connects the shopping centre in Deinze with the free parking at Brielpoort. It is also an important link in the city centre network for pedestrians and cyclists who can follow the paths from one pleasant spot to the next.

The preparatory works started in the autumn of 2019. The bridge itself was completed on Monday 21 September 2020. Contractor Herbosch-Kiere and Electro Goeminne took care of the further installation works. The area around the bridge was reconstructed.

The limited gradient of 4.5% makes it easy for cyclists and pedestrians to get to the other side of the touristic section of the Lys. Brielpoort bridge is 38 metres long and 4 metres wide. The city chose a mechanical bascule bridge rather than a fixed high bridge. Vessels with a maximum height of 3.2 metres can simply pass underneath the bridge while the bridge is folded open for higher vessels.

Lydia Peeters, Flemish Mobility Minister: “The new Brielpoort bridge creates a pleasant experience for both cyclists and pedestrians while respecting the necessary passage of ships. The bridge will also encourage people to explore the route on foot or by bike.”
