Fietsbrug Sluis 10 Schoten

New composite cycle bridge in Schoten

On September 24th, we installed the new innovative composite bicycle bridge in Schoten. The new bridge found its place beside Lock 10, offering a dedicated pathway for cyclists to safely and comfortably cross the canal while completely avoiding car traffic.

Previously, a small road bridge existed over the Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten canal, serving as a connection between the Sluizenstraat and the Wijnegembaan. This connection had limitations, as the narrow road didn’t allow for two-way traffic, making it challenging for cyclists and cars to share the space. To ensure that cyclists and pedestrians could cross safely, a separate cycle bridge was necessary.

What sets this project apart is the exclusive use of composite materials, eliminating the need for traditional concrete or steel components. The bridge, weighing approximately 35 tonnes, boasts a remarkable span of 32 meters and a spacious 5-meter width, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable cycling experience for all users.

The final phase of the project includes seamlessly integrating the bridge with existing towpaths and planting new trees to enhance the natural beauty of the area. If all goes according to plan, the first cyclists are expected to enjoy the benefits of this innovative bridge by mid-November 2023.

The works will be carried out on behalf of De Vlaamse Waterweg. The installation of the bridge was done in collaboration with Sarens nv.
