The Miessesquare site is located in the municipality of Anderlecht in the district of Kuregem. The site covers an area of approximately 2500 m². The purpose of treating the contamination on this plot was to remove a contaminated core formed by the activities of an old gas plant. That core consisted of a complex mix of contaminants: HAPs, mineral oils, BTEX, phenol, heavy metals and cyanides. The soil remediation was carried out by excavating to 5 m-nz and lower in some areas, followed by drainage of the area with groundwater to a depth of 5.5 m-nz.
During the implementation phase, the basement of the former gas plant was discovered which contained a number of old tar pits. The pure product was extracted using a tanker truck and taken away for processing. The contaminated soil was thermally decontaminated.
