In the past, the City of Ghent had carried out several soil analyses on a plot adjacent to the Sint-Baafskouter Park which showed that the soil was contaminated due to historical dumping activities. The exploratory descriptive soil analysis showed that the soil was contaminated with mineral oil, heavy metals and PAHs in the solid part of the earth. As the City of Ghent was intending to sell this land, Herbosch-Kiere needed to carry out remediation before it could be sold.
Herbosch-Kiere carried out the soil remediation by excavating the site and covering the residual contaminants with a living layer (replenishment).
